Note:

Although I am somewhat new in  mountaineering, I firmly believe that I am not new when it comes to outdoor events.  For more than 16  years, I was exposed to numerous challenging & unforgettable activities. Not included are several hikings, campings,  overnights, summer camps, river treks, trail blazings and other minor activies.

  Featured Climb:

Mt. Kanlaon

October 2003

with Jun-Jun Estoce

and  Reynald Deniay(guide)

I can consider our Mt. Kanlaon Climb as one of the most successful activities I ever had!  Maybe 99% happened as planned...of course, due to a long period of preparation like talking to those who have been there, surfing the internet, listening to weather forecasts, reading all sorts of maps, I was very confident of our success rate from the very beginning until the end!

It was Signal No. 1 in Central Visayas when we (Junior and I) left Cebu at around 6:00 a.m. on Friday.  We reached Toledo before lunch.  We were very lucky because it seems that the ferry was really waiting for our arrival.  It turned out that it was the last ferry allowed by the Coast Guard to travel towards San Carlos City that day because of the poor weather.

We were so hopeless upon seeing that the weather was really bad!  Finally, we reached the Port of San Carlos City for the first time.  We had lunch nearby and it was still raining when we rode a trisikad towards the Bus Terminal.

While on the bus, we enjoyed the scenery at the same time we  prayed  that the weather will return to normal.  Upon arrival at the Kanlaon City Bus Terminal we immediately arranged for a habal-habal  to take us to Maput-the gateway to Mt. Kanlaon...

After a short ride, the habal-habal driver told us to walk towards Mapot because the road was very muddy!  We reached a chapel in Mapot before dark and we met the father of Reynald who was also a guide.  We have final preparations planned at Reynald's house and I can really say that they were very hospitable.

Our plan is to start at around six in the morning the next day, reach Makawiwili Peak, then establish campsite at the Shoulder of Mt. Kanlaon then sleep.  Wake up early the next day, climb towards the summit/crater, break camp then hike towards Mananawin.  Then back to Kanlaon City.

And the rest was history...
